Understanding temperate reef fish larvae behaviour and implications for population connectivity

My pos-doc research intends to understand temperate reef fish larvae behaviour and implications for population connectivity.

Knowing the extent of larval dispersal is critical for an understanding of population connectivity and recruitment. Until recently it was assumed that larval dispersal was essentially explained by passive transport, predicted mainly by current patterns. However, recent models and field studies have demonstrated that passive transport by itself cannot explain the observed fish larval distributional patterns. The answer must rely partly in the swimming and sensory abilities of fishes. Despite the recent significant advancement of these studies in coral reef environments, temperate reef fish larval behaviour and sensorial capabilities are poorly investigated. The integration of ontogeny, behaviour, physiology and relevant life history traits of fish larvae is extremely promising in approaching these issues.
